Tambopata 3 Day Tour from Puerto Maldonado | Sandoval Lake & Monkey Island

Overview

Tambopata 3 Day Tour from Puerto Maldonado & Lake Sandoval & Monkey Island takes you into one of Peru’s most extraordinary natural reserves, located in the Madre de Dios region. This protected area safeguards an incredible variety of ecosystems, from the Andean highlands at the river headwaters to the remaining cloud forests, and finally to the lush lowland rainforests of the Amazon Basin.

As a result, Tambopata is considered one of the most biodiverse places on Earth. In fact, the reserve is home to more than 1,300 bird species, including 32 species of parrots—nearly 10% of the world’s total. Additionally, it protects around 200 mammal species, 90 types of frogs, 1,200 butterfly species, 94 species of fish, 135 varieties of ants, and more than 10,000 species of ferns.

Moreover, scientists continue to discover new species here, highlighting the ecological importance of this remarkable rainforest. For this reason, a Tambopata tour offers travelers a rare opportunity to experience pristine nature, exceptional wildlife, and untouched Amazonian landscapes in just a few days.

Day 1

Day 01: Puerto Maldonado – Monkey Island – Night Activity

We will begin the adventure by picking you up from your hotel, bus terminal, or airport in Puerto Maldonado. First, we will transfer you to our office and then continue by private transport to the boat pier. From there, we will travel by boat along the Madre de Dios River, enjoying scenic views of the Amazon rainforest until we arrive at our eco-lodge.

Upon arrival, you will be welcomed with a refreshing tropical fruit juice. Afterwards, we will escort you to your room for check-in and a short rest.

Later, we will start our first guided jungle walk, where you will discover lush vegetation, including trees that are more than 500 years old. Along the way, you may spot a wide variety of wildlife such as parrots, toucans, macaws, monkeys, snakes, and colorful insects like butterflies.

Then, we will return to the lodge to enjoy a delicious lunch.

In the afternoon, we will visit Monkey Island, a unique area home to several monkey species, including capuchin monkeys, tamarins, and squirrel monkeys. Often, some of them approach visitors closely, and you may even have the chance to feed them under guide supervision.

After sunset, we will head out on an exciting night caiman search along the banks of the Madre de Dios River. For this activity, a flashlight is required. With some luck, we may also spot the capybara, the world’s largest rodent, which can weigh up to 60 kilograms.

Finally, we will return to the lodge for dinner and spend the night surrounded by the peaceful sounds of the Amazon jungle.

Day 2

Day 02: Sandoval lake (Full Exploring) – Visit to Native Family – Night Walk

After breakfast, we will take a short boat ride to the entrance of Sandoval Lake. Once there, after checking in at the control point, we will begin a 3-kilometer (approximately 2-mile) walk through the rainforest to reach the lake, one of the largest and most beautiful bodies of water in the Tambopata National Reserve, also known as a natural habitat for piranhas.

Along the way, you will enjoy the rich Amazonian landscape. Upon arrival, our guide will arrange a rowing boat, allowing us to quietly navigate the lake while observing an incredible variety of wildlife. During this peaceful excursion, you may spot numerous bird species such as hoatzins, cormorants, jacanas, puma herons, and eagles, as well as mammals including howler monkeys, squirrel monkeys, black capuchins, tamarins, and sloths.

With some luck, we may encounter a family of giant river otters, which can grow up to nearly two meters long and are currently endangered. Additionally, the lake is home to one of the largest caimans ever recorded, reaching over four meters in length.

After exploring the lake, we will enjoy lunch either on the lakeshore or back at the lodge. Optionally, you may take a refreshing swim in the lake, especially welcome due to the warm Amazon climate.

In the afternoon, we will visit a native family, where you will have the opportunity to learn about traditional hunting techniques, basket weaving using jungle leaves, and other ancestral skills.

In the evening, after dinner, we will embark on a guided night walk. At this time, the jungle comes alive, offering the chance to observe a wide variety of insects, amphibians, reptiles, and other nocturnal animals, making it a perfect end to an unforgettable day in the Amazon.

Day 3

Day 03: Parakeets Clay Lick – Return to Puerto Maldonado

On the final day of our Tambopata Tour, we will start very early in the morning at 04:00 a.m.. First, you will embark on a one-and-a-half-hour boat journey along the river to visit the Parakeet Clay Lick, one of the most impressive wildlife spectacles in the Amazon.

During the boat ride, you will have the opportunity to observe various animals and birds along the riverbanks as the jungle awakens. Upon arrival, you will witness a spectacular natural display, where dozens of parakeets gather to feed on the mineral-rich clay, creating an unforgettable scene filled with color and sound.

After this incredible experience, we will return to the lodge, arriving around 08:00 a.m. to enjoy breakfast.

Then, we will check out of the lodge and begin our return journey by boat to Puerto Maldonado. Once at the dock, our staff will be waiting to transfer you to our office and subsequently to the airport or bus terminal, marking the end of an unforgettable Tambopata jungle adventure.
