The Tambopata National Reserve is home to the famous Chuncho Clay Lick, internationally recognized as the largest clay lick on Earth. Thanks to its exceptional biodiversity, this protected area offers some of the best wildlife viewing in the Peruvian Amazon. For this reason, we have carefully designed this 3-day program to showcase the highlights of Tambopata in a short yet immersive adventure.
Every morning, hundreds of brightly colored macaw, amazon parrot, and parakeets gather at the Chuncho Clay Lick along the river cliffs. These birds feed on mineral-rich clay that helps neutralize natural toxins in their diet. As a result, visitors can witness one of the most spectacular bird-watching displays in the Amazon Rainforest.

In addition, the magical sunset from the canopy tower creates unforgettable memories and excellent photography opportunities.
Later in the evening, you will join a guided night walk in the Amazon rainforest. During this activity, you will learn more about rainforest ecosystems and nocturnal wildlife. For instance, you may encounter tree frogs, tarantulas, stick insects, spiders, and occasionally snakes hidden in the jungle.
Moreover, this night tour is very safe and highly recommended for wildlife lovers and macro photography enthusiasts. As a result, it becomes one of the most memorable experiences of the tour.

Day 02: Macaws Clay Lick “El Chuncho” – Jungle Exploring
Wake up early at 4:30 a.m. and enjoy a light breakfast with coffee or tea before starting one of the most exciting wildlife experiences in the Tambopata National Reserve. Afterwards, you will begin a 1.5 to 2-hour boat journey upstream along the Tambopata River toward the famous Chuncho Macaw Clay Lick, one of the best places in Peru to observe macaws and parrots in the wild.
During the boat ride, you will explore the incredible biodiversity of the Amazon rainforest. Along the riverbanks, you may spot capybaras, the largest rodents in the world, as well as tapirs, monkeys, and many species of tropical birds. In addition, lucky travelers may even see a wild jaguar near the river. In fact, many of our guests have witnessed jaguars crossing the river or drinking water along the shores of Tambopata Peru. Therefore, every boat ride offers a unique wildlife experience.
Once you arrive at the macaw clay lick, you will witness one of the greatest natural spectacles in the Peruvian Amazon. Every morning, hundreds of parrots and colorful macaws gather to feed on mineral-rich clay found on the riverbank. This natural behavior helps the birds eliminate toxins from their diet and obtain important minerals.
Among the species commonly seen are the red-and-green macaw, scarlet macaw, and blue-and-yellow macaw. Furthermore, several species of parrots and parakeets also visit the clay lick throughout the morning. On active days, you may see hundreds of birds flying above the river. As a result, this becomes an unforgettable Amazon wildlife experience.
Later in the morning, you will return to the lodge to relax and enjoy the peaceful surroundings of the rainforest. For example, you can rest in our hammock area near the river while listening to the sounds of nature. Meanwhile, the jungle atmosphere creates the perfect place to disconnect and relax.
At midday, you will also have the opportunity to swim in the Tambopata River and enjoy the refreshing waters of the Amazon jungle.
